Mustangs stay on pace with victory over Eagles

Costa Mesa High’s girls tennis team made it four straight in
Golden West League play Thursday, besting cross-town rival Estancia,
13-5, on the winner’s courts.
Senior singles standout Hilary Havens swept, and so did the
Mustangs’ entire doubles entry.
Chi Doan and Minhthy Pham, Laura Fais and Brenda Tran and Paulina
Rodriguez and Valerie Gomez logged sweeps to push the Mustangs (4-4
overall) over the top without any help at all from the singles
entries.
Costa Mesa is at Westminster Tuesday, then hosts Santa Ana (4-0)
on Thursday. Among Santa Ana’s victories is a 13-5 win over Estancia.

In another high school girls tennis match:
* Sage Hill was a 17-1 winner at Fairmont Prep in Anaheim,
improving to 4-2, 3-1 in the Academy League.
Kellie Ammerman, Katie McKitterick and Paige Fuller swept in
singles.

CROSS COUNTRY: Golden West League
The Costa Mesa High girls cross country team narrowly defeated
crosstown rival Estancia, 28-29, in a tri-meet that Saddleback won
and hosted at Mason Park in Irvine. The Estancia boys, led by
Humberto Rojas’ 15:15 first-place clocking, earned victories over the
Mustangs and Saddleback.
Costa Mesa senior Christine Bjelland (18:26) won the girls race.
Estancia’s Diana Rosete followed Bjelland, coming in at 18:58. Costa
Mesa’s Hanh Nguyen (21:42) also finished in the top 10. Saddleback
defeated Mesa and the Eagles.
On the boys’ side, Estancia had five runners in the top eight and
seven runners in the top 11. Alex Cahuantzi finished third (15:53),
while Aaron Van Geem contributed to the victories coming in fifth
(16:09). The team effort continued with Abel Flores (seventh, 16:20)
and Matt Zich (eighth, 16:27).
Costa Mesa’s Carlos Ibarra was the Mustangs’ top runner, finishing
sixth (16:11).

FIELD HOCKEY: Tars remain unbeaten
GARDEN GROVE -- The Newport Harbor High girls field hockey team
and goalie Amanda Wittman posted its fourth shutout of the season and
remained unbeaten after a 6-0 victory over nonleague host Santiago
Thursday.
Kristen Jendrusina and Caitlin Farrell each had a stick on the
Sailors’ first goal. Jendrusina completed a hat trick, as she scored
Newport’s next two goals. Kaley Nix and Chanelle Sladics added one
goal each, and Danielle Pfaff moved up from her sweeper position to
score her first goal of the season.
The Sailors (3-0-2) fired off 36 shots, and did not allow a shot
on defense. The Santiago goalies recorded 19 saves. Santiago dropped
to 0-4-0.
GOLF: CdM girls win
Corona del Mar High’s girls golf team was a 248-255 winner over
Aliso Niguel in a nine-hole nonleague match Thursday at Newport Beach
Country Club.
Jennifer Wood was CdM’s leader and the match’s medalist with a 43
on the par-35 course. Jackie McCoy (44), Katie Albright (48),
Veronica Friedman (54) and Maggie Nelson (59) followed.
MEN’S SOCCER: Lions lose, 3-2
The Vanguard University men’s soccer team let a 2-1 lead slip away over the final seven minutes, as nonconference host Alliant
International defeated the Lions, 3-2, Thursday in San Diego.
Alliant’s David Hausler scored with 10 seconds left to lift his
team to the victory.
Armando Ortiz got the Lions (4-6) on the scoreboard first,
finishing an assist from Matt Hess. Alliant tied it up a few minutes
later. In the 27th minute, Hess scored his 13th goal of the season.
WATER POLO: Newport JV wins
The Newport Harbor High boys junior varsity water polo team
outscored the Costa Mesa varsity squad, 7-3, in the second half en
route to a 13-6 nonleague victory at Mesa Thursday.
Newport’s Trevor Gregory scored a game-high four goals, while
Brody Curtis and Morgan Laidlaw contributed three each. Christian
Darnas led Costa Mesa with three goals, and goalie Matt Jaroslawski
recorded nine saves.
VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard falls in four
Vanguard University dropped its ninth straight women’s volleyball
match Thursday at The Pit as visiting Alliant International
University triumphed, 21-30, 30-21, 30-22, 30-25.
