Newport Harbor High’s club surfing team won its second straight
competition Thursday morning, stopping Laguna Beach with an 66-60
margin at Thalia Street in Laguna Beach in unusually good 2 to 4-foot
surf with good form.
Strength in the long board and body board were decisive.
Nick Kelly won the boys long board and Justin Kast and Mike Beck
went 1-2 in the boys body board.
In the short board, Newport Harbor’s Geoff Rill and Bronson
Hovnanian were heat winners. Also with solid finishes in the short
board heats were Tommy Holbrook (second) and Will Anderson (second).
Erika Hoesseini and Amy Lowery were 1-2 in the girls short/long
board class, but scores in this class are not included in the
nonleague point standings.
The Sailors will be in their home seas at 56th Street in Newport
Beach Tuesday morning against Los Alamitos.
