UCI crashes Waves, 9-7

Sophomore Dreason Barry, a two-meter man on the UC Irvine men’s
water polo team, scored four goals to lead the second-ranked
Anteaters to a 9-7 win over nonconference visitor Pepperdine, which
is No. 7, Thursday.
Barry scored one goal in each quarter, including an extra-man goal
with 1:48 remaining in the third period to give the Anteaters (6-2)
the lead for good at 6-5.
After Phil Garcia gave UCI a 7-5 lead with a goal with 6:39
remaining, Pepperdine’s Karl Niehaus netted a power-play goal with
5:03 left to draw the Waves within, 7-6. UCI’s Garrett Gentry scored
an extra-man goal with 4:25 left and Barry threw in his final goal of
the night with 3:44 remaining that gave the Anteaters a secure 9-6
margin.
Garcia and Powers added two goals each for UCI. Pepperdine dropped
to 3-3.
Anteater goalie Doug Finfrock recorded 10 saves.
UCI returns to action in the Northern California Tournament hosted
by California, Oct. 5-6, and will face Air Force in the opening
round, Oct. 5 at 8 a.m.
