Steinbeck films will be shown
John Steinbeck’s works will be the subject of three screenings
next month at the Newport Beach Central Library. “The Grapes of
Wrath,” a 1940 film starring Henry Fonda, will be screened at 5 p.m.
Wednesday. The Academy Award-nominated 1984 drama “El Norte” will be
shown at 5 p.m. Oct. 3. The 1996 Emmy Award-winning “A.K.A. Don
Bonus: A Video Diary” will be shown at 7 p.m. Oct. 10. A discussion about Steinbeck’s life and works at 3 p.m. Wednesday will precede the
film. All the events are free and are at the Central Library, 1000

Library hosts art and essay contest
Students in seventh through 12th grades are invited to cash in on
their understanding of tolerance through the Newport Beach Public
Library’s “Peace Through Understanding: An Art and Essay Contest.” To
qualify to win one of four $100 savings bonds, they may submit either
a 250- to 350-word typed, double-spaced essay or a piece of
two-dimensional art that expresses their thoughts on tolerance. All
entries must be submitted to a Newport Beach Public Library location
by Oct. 18.
