Several hundred educational and business leaders and elected
officials from throughout Orange County will hear William M.
Habermehl, superintendent of the Orange County Department of
Education, present the State of Education Address from 4 to 6 p.m.
Wednesday.
The reception, benefiting Learning for Life and sponsored by the
Orange County Teachers Federal Credit Union, will be held at the
Grand Ball Room of the Hilton Costa Mesa.
Habermehl is expected to discuss the state budget and its effects
on school districts in Orange County for the school year, teacher
standards and recruitment, state-mandated test results and
educational system needs.
Former state of California Education Secretary Marian Bergeson
will serve as the master of ceremonies of the event chaired by John
Dean, Orange County superintendent of schools emeritus, and yours
truly, a retired Newport-Mesa Unified School District trustee.
Learning for Life is a Character Education and Career Exploration
program serving 30,000 youth in Orange County, according to David

youth to make ethical choices throughout their lives,” he adds.

day coordinator for the Westminster School District will be honored
during the reception. Northern Trust Bank offices in Newport Beach
and Los Angeles have joined with Learning for Life Board Member

awareness, services and treatment.
On Oct. 6, Soroptimist International Newport Harbor will join
50,000 Soroptimists to promote our annual End Workplace Violence by
