Beach Doc lending a hand

Long-known as the “beach doctor,” it seems appropriate for Dr. Tim

Brown to launch a golf tournament to help clean up the ocean.

Brown, the lead partner at Newport Spine and Sport in Newport

Beach and a regular fixture at pro surfing and beach volleyball

events, will host the inaugural Tim Brown Invitational Golf

Tournament, presented by Ocean Pacific Apparel, Thursday at

Strawberry Farms Golf Club.

Proceeds from the TBIGT will support two Orange County Coastkeeper

projects: the Giant Kelp Reforestation Project at Crystal Cove and a

clean water initiative in partnership with the Newport Harbor

Nautical Museum. The mission of the Orange County Coastkeeper is to

preserve, enhance and restore the Orange County marine habitat and

watershed.

The TBIGT, held in conjunction with the Op Classic Surf Contest in

Newport Beach Sept. 25-29, will start at noon and be followed by an

awards ceremony and auction, with television commentator, surfing

magazine publisher and former world champion surfer Peter Townend as

the emcee.

Brown, a Daily Pilot Sports Hall of Famer and former Newport

Harbor High and University of Redlands football star, was named by

the American Chiropractic Association in 1998 as Chiropractor of the

Year. He was the founding Director of Sports Medicine for the

Association of Volleyball Professionals Tour and has performed

similar duties for the Association of Surfing Professionals Tour and

Ballet Pacifica. For TBIGT details: (949) 723-5424 or (949) 496-4236.

Will Tipton of Big Canyon Country Club and Steve Rhorer of Mesa

Verde Country Club captured their respective men’s club championships

recently, staking claim to an early invitation to play in next

summer’s Jones Cup.

Tipton became the sixth different player to win the Big Canyon

title in six years, while Rhorer snapped Pete Daley’s string of four

straight Mesa Verde championships.

In a three-round Mesa Verde championship last month, Rhorer shot

70-72-74--216 to win by seven strokes over Daley (74-74-75--223).

Randy Thorne (225), Farrell Hinkle (226) and Tom McGreevey (226)

rounded out the top five.

The Jones Cup, billed as the ultimate community pro-am, is set up

to reward the four men’s club champions in the Daily Pilot

circulation, while celebrating Newport-Mesa golf and featuring

high-profile golf professionals from the area’s private country

clubs.
