The intense heat the past Labor Day Weekend brought with it didn’t
faze a Costa Mesa girls soccer team as they stomped through the heat
to win their age-division championship in the 2002 McMillan Labor Day
Tournament.
The girls 16-and-under soccer team from Costa Mesa won their
respective age division crown in the weekend tournament held at the
Farm Complex, coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half
against Westminster in their first game to win, 3-2.
Costa Mesa goalie Jessica Pizarek saved a last-second shot by
Westminster to preserve the win.
Members of the team include: Brianna Henderson, Michelle Paplos,
Briana Wilson, Lisa Newton, Alissa Hilliard, Deanna Sanchez, Lauren
Cushing, Lauren Donner, Rachel Ronquillo, Amanda Loera, Jessica
Gavilan, Jessica Pizarek, Heather Williams and Stephanie Castillo.
Another Costa Mesa girls soccer team had a successful weekend, as
the girls 11-and-under AYSO-Plus team went undefeated in the
tournament, outscoring their opponents, 4-1.
Shay Goldberg scored three goals for the team as Jeana de Arakal,
Justine Cathey and Dennise Lozano attacked with speed at the forward
position.
Steady midfield play was provided by Megan Henderson, Kendra
Fisher, Allyson Wallace, Shona Lamb and Jennifer Johnston while Misha
Brown, Natalie Seckel, Evelyn Manning and Erin Rodman stopped many
attacks as defenders.
Wallace, Johnston and Lamb shared goaltending duties for Costa
Mesa.
The McMillan Tournament featured 61 teams in boys and girls age
divisions from 11-and-under through 16-and-under from Costa Mesa,
Westminster, Garden Grove, north and south Irvine, Corona del Mar,
Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Tustin, Lake Forest, Rancho Santa
Margarita, Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente. A
team from Costa Mesa-Club Atlas also participated in the tournament.
* The Corona del Mar Boys 13-and-under team lost to Irvine, 2-0,
in the semifinals Sunday, but barely missed reaching the finals.
