The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team will open its season
Sept. 12 with the No. 1 ranking in CIF Southern Section Division
II-AA, it was announced Wednesday.
Coach Dan Glenn’s Sailors, who debut at home against Laguna Beach,
were runners-up in Division II-AA last season.
Corona del Mar, which also opens Sept. 12 against visiting Marina,
is ranked No. 3 in Division III-A.
Mira Costa, which won the II-AA title last season, sweeping
Newport Harbor, 15-8, 15-3, 15-10, in the title match, is ranked No.
2 in Division I-A.
Westlake, Huntington Beach, Santa Barbara and Chaparral round out
the top five in Division II-AA.
Harvard-Westlake, bidding for its sixth section title in eight
years, is top-ranked in Division III-A.
Bishop Montgomery, which lost to Harvard-Westlake in last year’s
division title match, is ranked No. 2, one spot ahead of Coach Bill
Christensen’s Sea Kings.
The volleyball polls are compiled by section coaches.
