Coast crushes foe, 7-0
Bryce Alderton
This time the Orange Coast College men’s soccer team was on the
opposite and better end of a shutout -- the winning end.
The Pirates evened their record at 1-1 after they defeated
Imperial Valley, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon at OCC in nonconference play
while not allowing Imperial Valley a single shot on goal. OCC had 18
shots on goal.
OCC scored six second-half goals after leading at halftime, 1-0.
“We were trying to force things in the first half instead of
getting back and letting things happen,” said assistant soccer coach
Kevin Smith. “In the second half we stayed tight defensively and
didn’t give the ball away that much. We played much smarter
all-around in the second half.”
Freshmen Miguel Ochoa, Derek Martell and Jarred Zitt each scored
two goals while Steve Jennings netted his first goal of the season in
the 12th minute to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
Ochoa, Reese, Steve Vellanoweth, Bobby Dulle, Joe Salinas and
Charles Thompson all had assists for the Pirates, who play at San
Diego Mesa today at 4 p.m.
Zitt scored his first goal in the 82nd minute, dribbling the ball
through a pair of defenders and blasting the ball above the
outstretched arms of Arabs’ goalkeeper Luis Miron. Zitt then scored
his second goal two minutes later, capitalizing on a rebound 10 yards
from the goal to fire a shot that slid under Miron.
The second half improved drastically according to Zitt, who said
players clumped together in the first half.
“We needed to spread out more and not charge in so much but take
our time,” said Zitt, a 5-foot-9, 135-pound freshman who played at
Edison High in Huntington Beach. “We needed to find a little space to
get in and score some goals.”
