In a closely contested series of tennis matches that determined
who would win the 2002 tournament cup, six division teams
representing Northern California defeated Southern California last
Saturday to win the state title in competition held at the Los
Angeles Tennis Center at UCLA.
The Emerald Bay girls’ 14-and-under team, comprised of seven
Laguna Beach youngsters, was part of the Southern California
contingent playing at UCLA.
“The girls did a pretty good job. Overall it was a great day for
everybody,” said Emerald Bay coach and Laguna Beach resident,
Gretchen Miller. “We had fun and the girls had a really great time.
Next year, we hope to win the cup.”
Emerald Bay lost all six matches in singles play but rallied to
win two of three doubles matches.
Winning points for Emerald Bay in doubles play were the teams of
Lauren Thigpen and Piper Miller, and Hayley Miller and Katherine
McIntyre.
