Costa Mesa hits
recycling goal
Costa Mesa on Thursday joined a list of 195 other municipalities
that have met statewide recycling goals. The California Integrated
Waste Management Board reported that the city satisfied the
requirement to divert from landfills at least 50% of its waste.
In 1989, cities and counties throughout the state were told they
had until 2000 to recycle half of their trash. Of the 445
jurisdictions affected by the 1989 act, about 195 have managed to
meet the ambitious goal of recycling half of their garbage so far.
The state recycling agency board has not completed the process of
verifying which jurisdictions have met recycling guidelines. Newport
Beach joined the ranks of those cities meeting their goals earlier
this month.
Costa Mesa diverted from landfills about 51% of its waste. Nearby
Santa Ana diverted 56%, the agency reported. Four other Orange County
cities received deadline extensions to Dec. 31, 2003. They are Dana
Point, Laguna Niguel, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
