Artists boys, girls pick up tourney wins

The Laguna Beach High boys’ and girls’ water polo teams began
their Hawaiian adventure in style this week by going undefeated in
their first two games at the 34th annual Hawaii Invitational Water
Polo Tournament in Honolulu.
The teams arrived in Honolulu last Sunday, then began tournament
play on Monday morning at Punaho High School.
GIRLS
Laguna Beach opened play Monday with a 7-4 victory over Coronado.
Annie Preble led the Artists attack with three goals and Addison
Doud scored twice. Kat Gordon and Caitlin Carrol completed Laguna’s
scoring with one goal apiece.
On Tuesday, the Artists improved to 2-0 in tourney play with a 5-3
win over Modesto, the top-seeded team in their bracket.
Laguna Beach took a 4-1 lead at the half and then held off a
second half Modesto charge.
Preble again led the scoring, this time with a pair of goals and
Gordon, Carrol and Doud each scored once.
The two victories improved Laguna Beach’s summer record to 28-8.
The Artists were to play Club TED from Palo Alto Wednesday in
their final first round game.
BOYS
Laguna Beach recorded its first tournament victory Tuesday with a
6-2 decision over Santa Margarita in a first round game.
Nima Mortazavie and Brian Early paced the Artists with two goals
apiece, and goals went to Chris Cole, Nick McConnel and Matt
McCollum.
On Monday, Laguna Beach fought top-seeded Coronado to a 4-4 tie.
Chris Stansbury netted two goals and Early and McConnell each scored
once.
Laguna Beach, 1-0-1 in the tournament and now 21-10-3 on the
summer, had two remaining first round games left to play this week
including a Wednesday match with La Morinda.
