Former Ocean View High volleyball standout Katie Lindquist teamed
with her partner, Heather Lowe, to win one match at last weekend’s
Manhattan Beach Open held at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
Lindquist and Lowe, of Redondo Beach, defeated the team of Erin
Galli/Valinda Hilleary, 21-15, 21-17, in a first round match.
The duo, however, was ousted from the women’s tournament title
contention in the second round of winner’s bracket play.
The team of Carrie Busch and Leanne Schuster, a Manhattan Beach
resident, eliminated Lindquist and Lowe by scores of 25-23 and 21-12.
Busch and Schuster were the third seeded women’s team; Lindquist
and Lowe entered the tournament with a No. 14 seed.
Lindquist usually teams with her younger sister, Tracy, who was
unavailable for the Manhattan Beach Open.
For the first time during the 2002 Assn. of Volleyball
Professionals tour, the women’s competition did not go according to
form.
The No. 2 seeded team of Annett Davis and Jennifer Johnson upset
No. 1 Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs, 13-21, 23-21, 15-9, in the
final. It was the first loss of the year for McPeak and Youngs who
had won all four previous AVP events.
The men’s title went to hometown favorite and Olympic gold medal
winner Eric Fonoimoana and teammate Dax Holdren, who defeated Mike
Whitmarsh and Canyon Ceman, 21-15, 21-18.
The men’s final was televised by NBC.
