Notre Dame professor will lecture tonight
“Why be Catholic?” is a free lecture that will be presented by
Lawrence S. Cunningham, a John A. O’Brien Professor of Theology at
the University of Notre Dame. The lecture will be sponsored by the
Notre Dame Club of Orange County and will be held at 7:30 p.m. today
at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Newport Beach.
Cunningham is a graduate of St. Bernard’s College Seminary and
earned his master’s and doctorate degrees at Florida State
University. He has since lectured in Canada, Europe and Africa.
The recipient of three Catholic Press Assn. awards and several
teaching excellence awards, Cunningham has written or edited 17
books, more than 50 scholarly articles and 200 essays for pastoral
and popular publications. His most recent book is “Thomas Merton and
the Monastic Vision.”
The lecture is a presentation of the Notre Dame Alumni Assn.’s
Hesburgh Alumni Lecture Series and is delivered by Notre Dame faculty
members nominated by colleagues and the deans of the university’s
colleges and law school.
The event is open to the public and will be followed by a
reception.
