Having read yet another misleading letter to the editor,
irresponsibly printed, despite the editor’s knowledge of the true
facts of the matter, I find it impossible to hold my silence any
longer.
The Balboa Bay Club has never played any role in water pollution,
and it is most unfair for the Daily Pilot to continue spreading
misinformation that the Balboa Bay Club has done so.
Any right-thinking person realizes that it would be completely
ridiculous for a company operating on the bay to do anything to spoil
the water there.
It is in the Balboa Bay Club’s best interest to see that the water
of Newport Bay is as clean and clear of pollution as it can be, and
we do all in our power to see that we do not harm.
The sulphurous odor that one occasionally notices when soil is
moved comes up from the soil and is indigenous to all properties
along Coast Highway, not just the Balboa Bay Club property.
It is caused by decaying organic material and is completely
normal, though unpleasant at times, for this part of Newport Beach.
The odor is present from time to time all along the Mariner’s Mile
area, even when there is no construction activity.
The Balboa Bay Club has operated continuously for over 50 years as
good neighbor to Newport Beach. Most people in this area have warm
feelings toward the BBC as it holds many happy memories of events
attended and sunny days spent here enjoying the beach and bay, not to
mention the many ways in which the Balboa Bay Club supports the local
community.
I am truly disappointed to read these false statements and
accusations perpetuated by the Daily Pilot. Maybe it sells
newspapers, but it is dishonest and the Pilot knows it.
