MISSION VIEJO - Pitcher Michael Bloom showed no signs of let down,
throwing a complete game to lead Newport Beach Little League Minor A
All-Stars to a 10-4 win over Aliso Viejo in a quarterfinal baseball
matchup in the winner’s bracket of the District 55 All-Star Tournament at
the Youth Athletic Park Saturday.
Bloom, who tossed a no-hitter in a 10-0 first-round victory over South
Mission Viejo June 29, ended four innings with strikeouts. He also
sparkled at the plate, going 2 for 2 with three RBIs and three runs.
It was Newport’s third win without a loss in the tournament.
Newport took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and scored another
three runs in the second.
The three runs second-inning runs all came with two outs, keyed by
consecutive hits from Michael Borchard, Parker Werline, Bloom and John
Christian.
Aliso got the leadoff batter on in the first two innings only to come
up empty-handed from sound defensive plays from Newport Beach.
In the first, Thomsen fielded a sharply-hit grounder and got a force
out at first while Werline took a one-hopper in right field in the second
and threw to first for another force out.
Newport scored two more runs in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead.
Borchard finished with three hits and three runs while Nick Flamson
had two hits and two RBIs to lead Newport’s hitting attack, which also
featured singles by Werline, Christian, Chris Freeman and Thomsen.
Joey Booth caught all six innings and Ben Capaldi tagged out a runner
at third to end a rally. Chase Carlile made two fine plays in left field.
