Stars shine in playoff opener

The Stars won just two games during the 10-game regular season in

Smythe Division play, but are coming alive in the playoffs.

They opened postseason play over the weekend by upending the Phantoms,

7-4, in overtime to advance to the next round.

Taylor Song, Tyler Song and Brett Harper each scored in overtime to

lift the Stars to the win.

Taylor Song’s three goals led the Stars. He also had an assist.

Taylor Song and Harper each finished with two goals.

Darrell McDonald had 37 saves in the net, including 10 in overtime.

Chris Johnson scored for the Phantoms (5-6), Trevor Horton had an

assist and Sean Easton had 29 saves.

In other playoff action:

Thunder 4, Avalanche 2

Bijan Nafison, Cole Thormodsgaard, Dylan Dongird and Christopher Bill

all scored, Thormodsgaard, Brett Webber and Jacob Gonzales each had an

assist, and Jonathan Criss recorded 27 saves to lead the Thunder (5-5-1).

Nicholas Modrak scored both goals for the Avalanche (3-8), and Joshua

Gane had 29 saves.

Slapshots 7, Spitfires 6

Austin Garcia scored unassisted in overtime to lift the Slapshots

(7-4) into the second round.

It was the last of three goals scored by Garcia, who also picked up an

assist.

Other Slapshots goals were scored by John Aldinger, Cory Cunningham,

Nathan Wing and Brad Murchison.

Murchison and Matthew Kibler also had an assist.

Sean Wing stopped 27 shot attempts.

Carsten Beith and Chad Morris each scored two goals to lead the

Spitfires (6-5). Christian Beith and John Sacco also scored, Christian

Beith, Sacco and Michael Feirstein each had an assist and Andrew Fabrigas

had 37 saves.

Biscuits 5, Jaguars 3

Colby Rios was the division’s high scorer on the day with four goals

and an assist, as the Biscuits (6-5) advanced.

Andrew Livezey scored a goal, Charles Condron had an assist and

Matthew Inouye recorded 27 saves to complete the Biscuits attack.

For the Jaguars, who ended the season at 7-4, Drew Jordan, Richard

Killian and Dmitri Sedykin all scored, Travis Beckman had an assist, and

William DeWitt had 28 saves.
