Girls water polo: CdM tops Newport for title

IRVINE - The Corona del Mar High girls club water polo team opened
its varsity summer schedule by sweeping five games, including a 6-5
title-game triumph over Back Bay rival Newport Harbor Sunday, to win the
two-day University Tournament at University High.
CdM rallied from a 4-2 halftime deficit to defeat Newport Harbor, as
six players shared the scoring load and Brittany Fullen made six saves.
Daniela DiGiacomo, Danielle Carlson, Brittney Bowlus, Camille Hewko,
Vivian Liao and Katya Eadington each had single goals for the winners.
DiGiacomo added three steals, while Eadington was credited with one
assist and two steals.
Katie Ericson scored three goals and had four steals to pace Newport
Harbor, which also received two goals and two steals from Carolyn Conway.
Newport goalie Terrin Cottan had eight saves.
CdM topped El Toro, 12-8, in a Sunday semifinal, after earning three
victories Saturday. CdM blew past Tustin, 13-4, Irvine, 13-5, and Agoura,
13-6, en route to Sunday’s semis.
Bowlus had five goals, three steals and two assists against El Toro,
which trailed, 8-2, at halftime.
DiGiacomo had a game-high four goals against Tustin, while Carlson and
Eadington each led the way with three goals against Irvine.
Bowlus and Carlson had four goals apiece against Agoura, followed by
DiGiacomo, who had three.
Bowlus led CdM scorers during the tournament with 14 goals, while
Carlson (13 goals, 12 steals and nine assists), and DiGiacomo (11 goals,
12 steals and four assists) continue to show the leadership that helped
CdM High win the CIF Southern Section Division IV title last winter.
Eadington amassed six goals and eight steals in five games, while
Hewko compiled nine steals and four goals.
Liao finished the tournament with five goals and six steals.
