ANTEATER AQUATICS COMPLEX - Charlie Schober, who coached UC Irvine
swimming and diving program the past 22 years, has been named UCI’s
Director of Aquatics.
A nationwide search for a new coach has begun.
Schober, who was instrumental in the development of the Anteater
Aquatics Complex, will now oversee usage and maintenance of the
facilities, hire and supervise lifeguards, plus serve as the director for
all UCI swim camps and clinics.
He also will develop fund-raising and marketing projects for all
Anteater aquatics, including water polo. In addition, Schober will serve
as the meet director for the Speedo Cup, the Big West Conference Swimming
and Diving Championships and other selected meets hosted by UCI.
Schober, Big West Conference Coach of the Year in 1992, coached 36 Big
West individual champions during his tenure. Throughout his coaching
career, he has coached 12 Olympic swimmers.
“We are appreciative of Charlie’s dedication to the student-athletes
in UCI’s swimming programs, and to the university, for the past 22
years,” said UCI Athletics Director Dan Guerrero, who announced Schober’s
new post. “The coordination of our aquatics complex and related programs
requires a full-time effort and we feel that Charlie is the best person
for that position.”
