followed by various breakout groups to discuss topics such as evangelism,
prayer, worship and many other subjects. The student ministries include
junior and senior high school ministries with discipleship groups and
student-led worship.
MISSION STATEMENT: The mission statement of Calvary Laguna is visually
portrayed in the foyer of the church. It is: “To preach the word of God,”
“Demonstrating the works of God,” “Touching the heart of God through
worship” and “Proclaiming the love of God as a bold witness.”
INTERESTING NOTE/HISTORY: In 1996, Bill Kelly extended an invitation
to Pastor Joe Sabolick and his wife Janelle to come to Laguna Beach and
start a Calvary Chapel style ministry. Previous efforts to begin a
Calvary Chapel had not proven successful. Prior to starting Calvary
Laguna, Sabolick served as an assistant pastor with Greg Laurie at
Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside. Kelly was instrumental in
arranging with the city for Calvary Laguna to meet at City Hall during
its initial phase of growth. Their first bible study began June 29, 1996
with 35 people. To date, Calvary Laguna is home to more than 1,800
families and continues to grow at a rapid rate. Because of the tremendous
rate of growth, Calvary Laguna faced many unique challenges including
parking, meeting locations for the various Bible studies and the growing
congregation. It became apparent that Calvary Laguna had outgrown the
Laguna Beach High School and was in need of a larger facility. After
working closely with the Laguna Beach City Council for over two years to
find a suitable location in Laguna Beach, they were able to purchase a
building at 45 Tesla in Irvine -- just south of the Verizon Amphitheatre.
