The Suns proved all season that they were the team to beat in Senior
League competition at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach, and on
Monday night, they concluded an unbeaten season with a 46-30 win over the
Pacers.
The Suns reached the title game by downing the Lakers, 39-21, in
semifinal round action.
Claire Bevacqua, a standout from St. Catherine’s School, and
fifth-grader Mya Olivier, led the victory as the Suns used power
rebounding along with several fastbreak baskets to eliminate the Lakers.
Bevacqua led all scorers with 17 points. Olivier, meanwhile,
contributed 12.
Juli Reed led the Lakers with 12 points.
The Pacers advanced to the final by edging the Heat, 35-33, in the
division’s other semifinal game.
Ali Terwilliger had converted a pair of crucial free throws with 1:10
to play to bring the Heat into a 33-33 tie. The score was still tied in
the final minute, but a steal by Brittany Clark with 31 seconds remaining
led to the Pacers’ winning basket.
The Heat were outscored in the final period, 12-7.
Clark paced the Pacers with 18 points, Terwilliger had eight points
and Rachel Hodges finished with seven.
Jensen Luther scored a season-high 10 points for the Heat, who also
received a team-best 12 from Alyssa Friedman.
