Youth Soccer: Riptides roll, 2-1, in championship

IRVINE - Defense was the name of the game for the Corona del Mar

Riptides.

The girls 10 and younger team held its opponents to two goals in four

games en route to winning the Irvine Memorial Day Soccer Tournament.

The Riptides defeated North Irvine, 2-1, in the championship. After

going down, 1-0, the Riptides responded with two goals from Kathryn

Conner with an assist from Allison Gordon win the game.

The Riptides defeated San Bernardino, 6-1, Covina, 1-0, and tied Long

Beach, 1-1, to reach the title game.

Forwards Jackie Dion (six goals), Kyla Winkle (goal), Lauren Smits

(goal) and Azadeh Nazemi, a member of Andersen’s girls grades 3-4 Daily

Pilot Cup championship team, provided the offense.

Strong midfield and defensive play was given by Bayli Stefli, Maddie

Smith, Kaylee O’Connor, Layne Kelley, and goalies Sarah Folks, Gordon and

Smits.
