NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor High senior Greg Perrine, who led
the Sailors to Sea View League championships in basketball and
volleyball, en route to league MVP honors in both sports, is the Sea View
League Male Athlete of the Year.
Perrine, who will attend Chapman University and play basketball, was
chosen by Sea View athletic directors as the top senior boys athlete.
The 6-foot-1 standout was a three-year varsity performer in each of
his sports, overcoming a torn ACL sustained in late July, 2001, to come
back and flourish in his senior year.
As Coach Larry Hirst’s senior point guard, he averaged 10.2 points per
game, was a rugged defender, and ran the show as the Sailors finished
20-7 and advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section
Division II-AA Playoffs.
He missed the Sailors’ first seven games while still recovering from
the knee injury, then scored a team-high 14 points in his first game
back, a nonleague home win over Edison.
He had a career-high 23 points in a league-opening victory at Aliso
Niguel. One week later, he hit the game-winning three-pointer in the
final seconds of a league triumph at Laguna Hills.
His senior volleyball season produced Co-MVP honors, along with senior
teammate Loyd Wright. Perrine, an outside hitter, was the consistent kill
leader for Coach Dan Glenn’s unit, which won all eight league matches and
advanced to the CIF Division II semifinals, compiling a 26-7 record.
Perrine was named MVP of the Orange County Championships, where he led
the Sailors to the title.
He is a likely All-CIF honoree when those honors are announced at a
later date.
As a junior, Perrine averaged 9.7 points in 28 basketball games,
helping guide the Tars to a 21-7 record and a berth in the CIF Division
I-A quarterfinals. He was a second-team All-Sea View selection.
His junior volleyball campaign also garnered second-team all-league
recognition, as he helped the Sailors reach the CIF Division III
semifinals.
As a sophomore, he averaged 4.9 points in 26 basketball games, earning
second-team all-league honors and helping the Sailors advance to the
second round of the playoffs.
He was also a member of the Sea View volleyball co-champions, who
advanced to the CIF Division I title game before falling to Back Bay
rival Corona del Mar.
He was called up to the varsity for the volleyball playoffs as a
freshman, when the Sailors went on to claim the CIF Division I crown.
