Viking spikers advance to quarterfinals

Marina High had an easy time in advancing to the CIF Southern Section

Division II boys’ volleyball plays as they took care of Woodbridge

Tuesday, 15-3, 15-9, 15-6, in a second round game played at Marina.

Steve Klosterman and Drew Wilson each had 14 kills as the Sunset

League champions advanced to play a 7 p.m. match Friday at St. John Bosco

in a quarterfinal showdown.

Marina opened playoff action last Friday with a 15-0, 15-6, 15-5 win

over visiting La Mirada. Klosterman had 12 kills and Wilson finished with

nine in the victory.

St. John Bosco advanced by ending Huntington Beach’s season on

Tuesday. The Braves came back to beat the host Oilers, 13-15, 15-13,

15-5, 15-1.

Huntington Beach, who entered the playoffs as an at-large team, used

Kenny Markward’s 29 kills to upend Pacific League titlist Claremont,

15-6, 15-3, 11-15, 15-13, last Friday.

Edison also had its season come to a close Tuesday as Foothill rallied

in an exciting match to claim a 14-16, 12-15, 15-9, 15-12, 15-12 victory.

Sean McLaren led the Chargers with 36 kills.

Last Friday, Edison opened postseason play by beating Trabuco Hills,

15-11, 15-5, 15-4.

In baseball, Marina will begin its bid for the 2002 Division II title

Friday when the Vikings travel to La Verne to battle Sierra League

champion Damien (18-7). The Vikings (18-10) needed to win two Sunset

League playoff games last Friday to earn the league’s third place berth.

They used Jacob Luque’s three-hit performance and J.J. Valicenti’s

relief pitching win to beat Los Alamitos, then rode Danny Gagliano’s

three-hit shutout and a home run by Matt Costello later in the day to

blank defending Sunset champion Edison, 4-0.

Wednesday’s late CIF softball postseason play had Edison, the Sunset’s

No. 3 team, playing at Troy in a Division II wild-card game. That winner

advances to play in Friday’s first round at Del Rey League champion

California. Golden West League No. 3 seed Ocean View played at Gladstone

in a Division IV wild-card game, and that winner will play at Del Rey

League runner-up St. Paul on Friday.
