The Ebell Club of Newport Beach has awarded $30,000 in scholarships to

13 teens at a luncheon at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. Students

awarded were Jeffery Lee of Corona del Mar High School; Jacqueline Newton

of Costa Mesa High School; Jessica Arias and Allyne Garcia of Estancia

High School; Ronald Hackett and Chris Candelaria of Monte Vista High

School; Jasmin Bode of Newport Harbor High School; Philip Szanto of

Orange Coast Middle High School; and Chris Hunn, Yong Choi, Jamie Shohat,

Triet Pham and Quyen Nguyen of Orange Coast Foundation. The Ebell Club

was founded in 1909 and provides both cultural and educational

opportunities for the Newport Beach community. The club was instrumental

in founding the first library in Newport Beach. In the past year, the

club has funded $100,000 in projects. . . . Marine Corps Pvt. Jose J. De

Anda, a 2000 Estancia High School graduate, completed basic training at

Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. De Anda successfully completed

12 weeks of training that included physical conditioning, and classroom

and field assignments such as learning first aid, combat water survival,

marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and weapons training. De Anda and other

recruits also received instruction on the Marine Corps’ core values of

honor, courage and commitment. . . . Greg Roman from Newport Beach was

part of a three-member team from Central Missouri State University that

placed first in crime-scene investigation in the 65th annual American

Criminal Justice Assn. National Conference in Cheyenne, Wyo., held March

18 to March 22. Students from the university captured three first-place

awards, two second-place honors, two third-place finishes and a top

academic award at the conference that had 400 students representing more

than 40 colleges and universities. Central sent seven students to the

competition. Before the competition, students were required to take a

written examination that focused on such areas as juvenile justice,

corrections, criminal law and police administration. They also

participated in physical agility testing, firearms competition and crime

scene investigation.
