College track and field: UCI athletes shine

UC Irvine track and field standouts Randi Houston and Suzanne
Purmort won individual events to highlight the Anteaters’ performance
Saturday in the Occidental College Invitational.
Houston won the women’s 200 meters in 25.63, while fellow freshman
Purmort topped the field in the 400 hurdles in 1:04.62.
Freshman Erin Curtis was third in the 100 (12.27), while sophomores
Jenny Liou (2:12.62) and Jenna Keith (2:14.41) were third and fourth,
respectively, in the 800.
Sophomore Julie Manson finished fifth in the 1,500 with a season-best
time of 4:38.96.
Lauren Adams was fifth (56.82) and freshman Amber Nefas sixth (58.00)
in the 400.
Senior Jimmy Onbizuka paced the UCI men with a second-place finish in
the triple jimp (44-6). Freshman Steve Higa (22-1 3/4), Onizuka (22-1
1/2) and sophomore Mike Wong (20-5) finished third, fourth and fifth,
respectively, in the long jump.
Sophomore J.J. Stein was third in the javelin (147-5) and freshman
Mike Beerer was fifth in the hammer throw (170-9).
UCI will host the Big West Conference Championships Wednesday through
Saturday.
