An armed man escaped on foot after holding up a Newport Beach card
shop at closing time Friday night, Newport Beach Police said.
The man entered the Images Hallmark store on Irvine Avenue in Newport
Beach a little after 8 p.m. Friday as a store employee unlocked the front
door to let the remaining customers out, said Lt. John Freeman of the
Newport Beach Police Department.
The man pointed a handgun at the cashier, demanding the woman open the
cash register, Freeman said.
He removed an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, put the
money into a brown paper bag, and ran out the back door, police said.
Police describe the man as 6 feet 3 inches tall, 240 to 250 pounds,
brown eyes, clean-cut, 35 to 40 years old, wearing a black suede leather
coat, white T-shirt, blue jeans, black gloves and a black beanie.
Detectives are investigating the case, Freeman said.
