Rotary cranks win streak to five
A slow start to the 2002 Majors Division season had not deterred the
spirit of Rotary. Since a 4-4 start the team has won five in a row.
Rotary kept its winning ways intact by defeating the San Juan
Capistrano Yankees, 8-6, the San Juan Capistrano Dodgers, 17-0, and
Hobie, 15-7.
During the streak, Rotary (9-4) has outscored its opponents, 57-13.
Against the Yankees, Rotary built an 8-1 lead behind the hitting and
pitching of Nick Witte and Austin Hyden, yet had to rally in their final
at-bat to pull out the win.
Witte pitched three shutout innings and held the Yankees to two hits
while striking out five. He, along with Hyden, had three hits. Hyden also
had an RBI, Will Bonsey and Roy Herbert each had RBI singles, Chris Smith
singled and scored, and Lorenzo Torriero had a double, scored, and closed
on the mound to preserve the victory.
Herbert, Hyden, John Palfreyman and Jack Monroe provided solid
defensive support.
The 17-0 whipping of the Dodgers saw Witte and Hyden combine on their
fourth one-hit shutout in their last eight games and every Rotary player
registered at least one hit for a total of 15.
Palfreyman tripled and singled twice, Hyden doubled off the left field
fence and had a four-run triple, Chris Smith tripled and singled and
Torriero and Herbert each had a double among two hits to power the
offense.
Smith and Jesse Cook each ripped long home runs and Hyden shut out
Hobie in the final three innings as Rotary overcame a 7-3 deficit to win,
15-7. Smith, who also had an RBI double, hit a solo homer in the first
inning and Cook delivered a three-run homer in the fifth to knot the game
at 7-7.
In the fifth, Rotary sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs
to take a 13-7 lead.
Hyden finished with four hits and two RBI, Herbert had three hits and
two RBI, Witte had an RBI double, Torriero had two hits and an RBI and
