Newport Beach Little League: Reds edge Mariners, 2-1

NEWPORT BEACH - Tough pitching and strong defense by both the

Mariners and the Reds prevailed in a Newport Beach Little League Majors

Division game the Reds won, 2-1.

The Reds’ Andrew Silva struck out eight, allowing three hits in five

innings of work.

The Mariners began the scoring in the bottom of the third with a

lead-off single by William Ham, followed by walks to Tom Adamson and

Michael Bear. With the bases loaded, Nick Freeman singled in a run to

give the Mariners a 1-0 lead.

The Reds came back in the top of the fifth inning on singles from

Timmy Winning and Evan McNerney and a walk by Eric Mooney to load the

bases. J.P. Gromly then doubled to center, scoring two runs to put the

Reds up, 2-1.

Mariner defense stymied a Reds’ rally in the top of the sixth. Eric

Rask and Freeman combined on a double play.

The Reds’ Bartlett came on in relief to get the first two batters in

the bottom of the sixth. Bear then singled to third and Freeman doubled

to right, putting runners on second and third. Mariners’ second baseman

Mooney nabbed a hard shot by Rask for the final out, giving the Reds

their 10th win on the year.

In other Majors action:

* Diamondbacks 6, Yankees 1 - Fletcher Della Grotta, Chris Rowen and

Steven Manning combined to pitch a no-hitter, while Scott Colton ignited

the offense with two home runs in a 6-1 Diamondback win over the Yankees.

Garret Amoroso, Michael Artenian, Tommy Colton, Rosen and Riley Sullivan

contributed to the D-back offensive attack. Patrick Brennan pitched three

strong innings for the Yankees.

*Diamondbacks 10, Mariners 0 - Chris Rosen’s three-run home run and a

bases-loaded triple sparked the offense as the D-backs blanked the

Mariners, 10-0. Garret Amoroso and Doug Kelly collected two hits apiece

while Scott Colton, Fletcher Della Grotta, Connor Whalen and Steven

Manning each had one hit. Colton, Della Grotta and Rosen combined to hold

the Mariners bats in check. Michael Bear, Nick Freeman and Bryce Donovan

contributed hits for the Mariners.

In AAA action:

* Braves 5, Dodgers 4 - Strong defense, timely hitting and solid

pitching came together for the Braves as they held off the Dodgers, 5-4.

Michael Franklin, Michael Delahanty, Austin Allen, Benny Townsend and

Dylan Salisbury all made strong defensive plays to keep the Dodgers at

bay. Andrew Dunlap, Nick Flamson and David Guibord combined to strikeout

eight Dodgers, allowing seven hits. The trio also contributed on the

offensive end. Flamson and Guibord scored in the first inning while

Jarrett Logan and Dunlap tallied runs in the third and fourth innings to

ward off a four-run explosion by the Dodgers in the third inning.

* Dodgers 7, Angels 6 - With the game tied going into the bottom of

the sixth, Dietrich Stauffer hit a bases-loaded single to bring home the

winning run as the Dodgers edged the Angels, 7-6. Kevin Wang pitched four

solid innings and had three hits for the Dodgers. Michael Borchard, Jacob

Sanooke, Colin Krahe, Stauffer and Nick Taormina provided timely RBI

hits. The Dodgers’ defense was led by Wang, Borchard and Emery Molnar.

For the Angels, Doug Watt and Brian Hurst each pitched strong innings.

Hurst (three hits) and Eric Morris (two hits) led the Angels’ offensive

attack.

In AA play:

* Red Sox 13, Cardinals 5 - The Red Sox’ hitting attack was led by

Cole Chatham, Brandon McHugh and Michael Dahl. Defensive plays by Matt

Berry, Matthew Funsten and Jonathan Metcalfe, each making every play that

came their way, helped the Red Sox to the victory. Fine pitching and

offensive firepower was also provided by Clark Cashion, Brent Lawson and

Taylor Epp.

* Diamondbacks 10, Giants 7 - The D-backs increased their record to

10-3-1 with a 10-7 triumph over the Giants in a battle of the top two

teams in the AA Division. The D-backs led all the way behind solid

pitching from Sam Cuberio and Austin Blodget. The D-backs got timely

hitting from Michael Taormina’s three-run home run, and a two-run

four-bagger from Andrew Machoskie. Eric Hallett’s double in the third

inning also drove in a run. Other D-backs stars included Jeremy Bowinkel,

Brandon Pick, Sandon Griffin and Jesse Marans, all playing solid defense

late in the game.
