College tennis: Vanguard men, women’s eliminated
COSTA MESA
- The Vanguard University men’s and women’s tennis teams were
eliminated in the semifinals of the NAIA Region II championships
Wednesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Club and TeWinkle Park.
The men lost, 5-2, to Point Loma Nazarene, while the women were
bested, 5-3, by Azusa Pacific.
Point Loma, ranked No. 21 in the NAIA, upset 19th-ranked Vanguard,
avenging two regular-season losses.
Sophomore Vilja Zilmer won the only singles match for Vanguard and
combined with freshman Carl Holmgren to with the No. 2 doubles match.
The loss breaks a string of seven consecutive years the Vanguard men
have appeared at the NAIA tournament.
The 24th-ranked Vanguard women, led, 2-1, after doubles victories by
Silina Yohner and Sara Bradley, as well as Lindsay Doyal and Megan
Godfrey. Yohner, a sophomore and Vanguard’s No. 1 singles player, won her
singles match, 6-4, 6-2.
The Lions split their two regular-season matches with the 16th-ranked
Cougars.
The Vanguard men end the season 12-9, 5-2 in the Golden State Athletic
Conference, while the women finish their season 10-9, 4-6.
