NEWPORT COAST - Sage Hill High had the tying run at third with one
out in the seventh, but Brethren Christian earned the final two outs on
strikeouts to record a 3-2 Academy League baseball victory at Sage Hill
Wednesday.
The Lightning (6-13, 1-11 in league), designated the visitor even
though the game was played on their diamond, closed to within 2-1 when
Tim Wilkins tripled in Charlie Dempsey in the fifth.
Brethren (9-8, 7-5) extended the lead with a run in its fifth, which
proved to be the difference.
Sophomore Chris Chiboucas walked and Dempsey doubled to start the Sage
Hill seventh. One out later, Wilkins’ RBI single made it 3-2 and put
runners at the corners. Wilkins stole second, but the next two hitters
fanned.
Wilkins, a sophomore who allowed just two earned runs, went the
distance on the mound for Sage Hill, striking out four.
