The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Orange County Affiliate
selected four Newport Beach residents to sit on the golf committee for
its second annual Links to the Cure Golf Tournament. Betsy Klein, Sally
Molnar, Lorrie Tuerk and Jeri Wilson were selected to participate in the
tournament that is geared toward raising funds to support breast cancer
research, education, screening and treatment. The event will take place
at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullerton. The
ability to host such events that allow the foundation to pursue its
mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease is
achieved in part by the people chosen to work for the foundation.
Recently, the local foundation, based in Costa Mesa, announced the
election of officers to serve on its board of directors for 2002-03. The
foundation will be headed by Heidi Shurtleff as president and will
include Aletha Anderson, president elect; Sandy Finestone, past
president; Kathy Yhip, secretary; Joyce Kirchhofer, treasurer; and Sharon
Turner, legal counsel. The committee chairs were also announced, and they
include Kathy Pearson, Race for the Cure; Jacquin Anastasio, board
development; Cathleen Brier, survivorship; Wilson, fund development; and
Molnar, administration and finance. Additional appointments include
Klein, marketing; Crystal Walsh, programs; Marcie Smith, education; and
Lisa Kantrowitz, community grants. While the foundation uses its
employees to help raise funds through various events, it also relies on
donations from local companies. The Vons/Pavilions grocery stores in the
Orange County area recently donated $2,157 to the foundation as a result
of the organization’s Vons Cares program, which provides customers with
an opportunity to make donations to various charities throughout the
year. Vons store manager David Jones presented the check to Komen
Executive Director Ann Truxaw Ramirez. The local foundation has raised
more than $7.7 million over the past 10 years. . . . Marine Corps Pfc.
Brian J. Torres, a 1998 graduate of Estancia High School, has completed
three months of his six-month deployment in the Mediterranean Sea and
Arabian Gulf. In support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Torres, along
with fellow Marines in the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, have conducted
offensive raids against Taliban and Al Qaeda forces in Afghanistan.
Torres’ unit also worked 18 days to complete humanitarian and civic
projects in various coastal areas of Kenya.
