Prep softball: Tars end league losing streak
IRVINE - The Newport Harbor High softball team defeated Sea View
League host Irvine, 4-2, Tuesday to break a 38-game league losing streak
on the field.
The Sailors had not won a league game on the field since the ninth Sea
View contest of the 1997 season. The Tars were awarded two forfeit wins
over Corona del Mar, which did not field a team in 1998. Then went 0-8 in
league from 1999-01 and were 0-5 this season against Sea View competition
before Tuesday.
“It has been a long time coming and the girls knew how much it meant
to me,” said Newport Coach Jess Martinson, who has been involved with the
program the last five years. “It also meant a lot to the juniors on our
team. They celebrated pretty good.”
Julianne Bass had two RBIs for the Sailors, who also received an RBI
from Kyley Dill.
Jennifer Gummerman had two hits to assist scoring rallies in the sixth
and seventh for Harbor, which broke a scoreless tie with one in the fifth
and took a 2-0 lead in the sixth.
After Irvine closed to within 2-1, Newport scored twice in the seventh
to lead, 4-1. Irvine added a run in the seventh and had the tying run on
second, when Newport pitcher Kim Moore induced a soft line drive to
junior shortstop Athena Vasquez for the final out.
Moore threw a complete-game six-hitter to improve to 12-5.
The Sailors were without their top hitter, as Amanda Campbell missed
the game due to an injury.
