Community & Clubs -- Jim de Boom
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Since the beginning of the school year, we have
been encouraging Daily Pilot readers to become mentors at three local
elementary schools, where 2,000 limited-English-speaking children need
help in learning to read by the age of 9. We have encouraged you to be a
volunteer mentor at Pomona, Whittier and Wilson elementary schools or
through the Shalimar Learning Center.
Here are the Shalimar volunteers at the Whittier after school learning
center: Bobbe Ross from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church; Carrie Takushi
from Newport Mesa Christian Center; Christine Rodriques, Sheri Yamasaki
and Audra Thurman from Vanguard University; Jud Ostle, a UC Irvine
student; Brittney Shifflet, Martha Zamora and Laura Zamora from Edison
High School; Jose Prado from Estancia High School; and Angie Perryman,
Gary Boelzner, John Linnert, Linda Horton, Nick Linnert and Renee
Ludbrook, who are friends of other volunteers.
The volunteers at the Shalimar Teen Center include Katie Brooks and
Jeff Fitzpatrick from Newport Mesa Christian Center; David Myers from
Rock Harbor; Sam Anderson, William Bandaruk, Terry Bandaruk, Janet
Barkawi, Don Farmer, Bert Hemenover, Harian Isaak, Steve LaZarr, Roger
Riley, Ray Rockoff, Wendy Sanders, Monique Sandhu, Paul Schoettinger,
Dennis Stick, Floyd Thompson and Kristina Wright from St. Andrew’s; Joan
Donahue and Ann Obegi from St. Joachim Catholic Church; Melanie Aves from
St. Marks Presbyterian Church; Paul Kelly and Ray San Vicente from Sts.
Simon and Jude Catholic Church; Estrellita Chang, David Chou, Eric
Corrales, Linda Enomoto, Ken Floyd, Anna Han, Sara Henderson, Christine
Ip, Grace Kamine, Sandy Kim, Christy Ko, Emily Kulin, Diana Lofti,
Katherine Mah, Anna Martinez, Megan Minor, Kristina Reyes, David Shynn
and Sarah Swancutt from UCI; Kit Kushin, Marc Mastriano, Amber Mueller,
Melissa Ramirez and Kara Townsend from Vanguard University; Brian Baker,
Sherry Bass, Jeb Kraul, Carol Leighton, Gene Mason, Sally Purdy, Steve
Silverman, Steve Robinson and Polly Stanbridge, who are friends of other
volunteers.
It doesn’t make a difference if you are 16 or 70, there is a child who
needs you to help them learn to read so they can be successful citizens
of the United States in the future. You can help by donating one hour a
week to mentor a child. We have some 2,000 children in first, second and
third grades in three Westside schools who need mentors. They need you.
To volunteer at Pomona Elementary School, call (949) 515-6980, at
Whittier Elementary School, call (949) 515-6898; and at Wilson Elementary
School, call (949) 515-6995, Ext. 3209. To volunteer at the Shalimar
Learning Center after-school program, call (949) 646-5797.
SHARING THE PROCEEDS: At its Monday meeting, Harbor Mesa Lions will
present local charities with annual allocations of funds raised during
the last year. Recipients are organizations such as Westside Boys & Girls
Club, Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, SOS Free Medical and Dental Clinic,
Orange Coast Child Care Center, Project LOOK, Orange Coast Interfaith
Shelter, Youth Employment Services, Blind Children’s Learning Center,
Women Helping Women, Lions District 4 L4 Sight and Hearing Foundation,
Beep Baseball and Lions Wilderness Camp.
The Harbor-Mesa Lions Club was able to raise more than $7,500 this
year at its various fund-raising events. These included a casino night,
spaghetti dinner, garage sale and a chili cook-off. Some of the funds
provided school supplies and American flags for students at Whittier
Elementary School, a donation to the World Trade Center Disaster Fund and
assistance to a needy family for Christmas. Monday’s meeting will take
place at 6:30 p.m. at the Costa Mesa Country Club.
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SERVICE CLUBS: Chuck Spence and Bill
Carpenter joined the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor. Jane Freeman joined
the Exchange Club of the Orange Coast.
WORTH REPEATING: From Thought for the Day by Greg Kelley of the
Newport-Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “It is by what we ourselves have
done, and not by what others have done for us, that we shall be
remembered in after ages.” -- Francis Wayland
