Sailors bumped off

Newport Harbor High’s boys volleyball team, perhaps jinxed by a

combination of too many matches, too many hurts and a highly regarded

opponent in host Huntington Beach, fell in five games Thursday night as

the Oilers scored a 12-15, 15-3, 1-15, 16-14, 15-7 nonleague victory.

Newport Harbor, 12-4, appeared to be on a roll with a 2-1 lead on the

heels of a 15-1 rout in the third game.

After Huntington Beach dominated most of the fourth game, the Sailors

fought back to tie it at 14, only to see the Oilers hold on for the 16-14

edge.

It was all Huntington in the deciding rally game as the Oilers

improved to 7-1.

“We were just playing a good team,” said Newport Harbor Coach Dan

Glenn, who held Brian Gaeta (knees) out with an eye on tonight’s match

with visiting Mira Costa.

Greg Perrine had 17 kills and Jamie Diefenbach had 10 kills. Erik

Peterson had 12 kills, Michael McDonald had 12 kills and setter Loyd

Wright had two blocks, three kills and 63 assists.
