The Corona del Mar High volleyball team follows its leader, Blair
Hoppe, to cruise past nonleague visitor Fountain Valley, 15-10, 15-5,
15-4, improving to 3-0 on the season. Hoppe finishes with a team-high 10
kills and four blocks against the Barons. Hoppe collects six of his kills
in the final game, while Dennis Alshuler (six kills and four blocks), Tim
Andrews (six kills), Greg Coon and setter Brady Beauchamp also contribute
heartily to the victory.
The Newport Harbor boys volleyball team sweeps past host Los Alamitos,
15-5, 15-5, 15-9. Newport is ranked No. 4 in the week’s Orange County
Top-10 poll even though this is its win of the season after three
straight losses. Adam Hearlson, a 6-foot-6 middle blocker, leads the
Sailors with 10 kills, 6-2 Scott Archbold slams eight kills, while Travis
Nelson and Ty Tramblie (seven digs each) spearhead the defense. The
Sailors feature just one senior on their roster, Dana Mesenbrink.
Costa Mesa baseball coach Doug Deats is tossed in the second inning of
a 7-3 nonleague win at Los Amigos. The Mustangs produce 13 hits led by
Brian Montoya’s 3-for-5 performance. Julius Vasquez has two hits,
including a 380-foot two-run double off the center-field fence in the
first inning. Deats says it’s his first ejection in his six years of prep
coaching.

The Corona del Mar High baseball team opens its Sea View League season
with a surprisingly easy 14-6 victory over Back Bay rival Newport Harbor.
In the fifth inning, CdM sends 12 batters to the plate, scoring seven
times on four hits and with the benefit of three Newport errors. Dan
MacMillan smacks his first home run of the season. CdM’s Tim DeCinces
finishes 4 for 5 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Todd Kehrli goes
3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs. George Chelius is the winning
pitcher.
The Estancia baseball team crushes Calvary Chapel, 13-3. Estancia
receives a dozen bases on balls and scores a dozen runs in the first
three innings. Amazingly, Calvary outhits the Eagles, 8-7. Steve King
provides a 3-for-3 performance with three runs scored and four RBIs. The
game is called after five innings because of darkness.
Orange Coast College baseball coach Mike Mayne announces he is
resigning at the conclusion of the current season. Two weeks earlier, OCC
basketball coach Tandy Gillis is “reassigned” away from his post. With
the exception of 1990, when he took a leave of absence, Mayne had been at
the Bucs’ helm since 1977. His teams capture six conference championships
and a state title in 1980. More than 100 players sign professionally,
including eight in the majors, during Mayne’s 16 years.
