Boys volleyball: CdM loses in semifinals

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Corona del Mar High’s boys volleyball team
defeated Capistrano Valley in the finale pool-play contest Saturday
morning in the Orange County Championships, then beat Laguna Beach in the
Silver Division (consolation) quarterfinals and lost to Canyon, 7-15,
15-12, 15-11, in the semifinals at Edison High.
Freshman outside hitter Kevin Welch, senior right side John Grod,
senior setter Spencer Miller and junior outside hitter Gunnar McClellan
were the Corona del Mar floor leaders as the Sea Kings played
short-handed (only eight players in uniform) because of a variety of
issues, including conflicts with Scholastic Aptitude Tests.
The Sea Kings, 3-2 in the tournament, defeated Capo Valley, 15-11,
15-1, then got past Laguna Beach in the quarters, 15-7, 16-14. They play Huntington Beach in a nonleague match Wednesday at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, the Sea Kings will host their annual Alumni Game at 7
p.m. Interested former CdM players should contact Coach Steve Conti at
the athletic office: (949) 515-6008.
