POLICE APPRECIATION BREAKFAST: There may still be a few tickets left
for the 31st annual Police Appreciation Breakfast to be held at 7:30 a.m.
Thursday at the Sutton Place Hotel. The breakfast, sponsored by the
Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, will honor the
outstanding efforts of the Newport Beach Police Department in making our
community a great place in which to live, work and play.
Many of Newport Beach’s front-line officers and their families will be
in attendance as they accept the appreciation of the community. For
ticket availability call the Chamber of Commerce at (949) 729-4400.
TALENT ABOUNDS: The Rotary Club of Newport Balboa enjoyed the singing
talent of eight students from Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor high
schools who participated in a singing contest with the four winners
advancing to the regional finals and possibly to the District 5320 finals
to be held at UC Irvine.
The contestants were Jeannie Herbst, Corona del Mar High; Martin
Glyer, Corona del Mar High; David McMahan, Newport Harbor High; Tara
Rybarski, Newport Harbor High; and Josh Westover, Newport Harbor High who
won the Male Musical Theater category; Alessandra Hass, Corona del Mar
High winner of the Female Classical category; Zarah Mahler, Newport
Harbor High winner of the Female Musical Theater category; and Mike
McLean, Newport Harbor High winner of the Male Classical category. Kevin
Weed served as the accompanist for the students while Newport Harbor High
teacher Gail Brower-Nedler proudly looked on.
Serving as judges were Warren Lortie, choir member, and Rodger
Whitten, minister of music, Corona del Mar Community Church,
Congregational; Gerry Long, a musician and former college music
professor; and Jan McKibbon, pianist and music director for the Rotary
Club. Wendell Sawyer, the Rotarian who coordinated the event, said the
judges had no easy task and they took almost 20 minutes to make their
decisions.
SUNRISE ROTARY BRIGHTENS THE DAY: At a recent Newport Beach Sunrise
Rotary Club meeting, President Tom Birch called on Willis Longyear, who
presented a club check to Bill Mountford of the Boy Scout Seas Base for
$3,000 to purchase a much-needed digital projector for the base. At the
same meeting, member Syd Lucas, together with Fred Hernandez and Mike
Bradford, presented Sue Goldberger, technology supervisor for Monte Vista
Back Bay High School, a check for $2,000 to purchase books for the
reading program. Lucas noted that the funds for the books came from the
Fountain of Youth coin collections at Fashion Island.
SCIENCE FAIR JUDGES: Twenty members of the Exchange Club of Newport
Harbor will serve as judges at the annual Science Fair to be held at
Anderson Elementary School on Tuesday. Some 85 students will enter
projects that will be judged during the fair.
SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION: Sons of The American Legion will hold its
annual Child Welfare Dinner/Dance on Saturday, March 23. This year, along
with the always great buffet and many great raffle prizes, Sons of the
American Legion member Jack Lillycrop’s nine-piece band will be playing.
Tickets, at $20 per person, are available at the Legion office or call
Scott Cullings at 714-285-9400.
WORTH REPEATING: From Thought for the Day by Greg Kelley of the
Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “Hold yourself responsible for a
higher standard than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself.
Never pity yourself. Be a hard master to yourself -- and be lenient to
everybody else.” -- Henry Ward Beecher
