Boys basketball: Tars’ Perrine MVP
Barry Faulkner
Newport Harbor senior point guard Greg Perrine, who came back from
summer reconstructive knee surgery to help guide the Sailors to the
school’s first outright Sea View League championship in 17 seasons, has
been chosen Player of the Year by the league’s coaches.
Perrine, a 6-foot-1 three-year starter, is among five Sailors
recognized all-league, including first-team selections Tony Melum and
Erik Peterson. Nedim Pajevic and Chase Cameron represent the Sailors on
the second team.
Perrine, who missed the Sailors’ first seven games while
rehabilitating a torn ACL, averaged 14.3 points in eight league games,
seven of which the Sailors won. Among those points was a three-pointer
with one second left for a 43-40 first-round win at Laguna Hills.
Perrine was a second-team all-league choice as a junior.
Melum, a 6-foot-6 forward, is a repeat first-team choice who was
All-CIF Southern Section Division I-A a year ago.
Melum’s best league performance was a 26-point, 13-rebound effort to
key a 54-40 title-clinching victory at Woodbridge in the regular-season
finale.
Peterson, a 6-3 forward and returning starter, was the defensive demon
for Coach Larry Hirst’s squad, which advanced to the CIF Division II-AA
second round before finishing 20-7.
Typically assigned to guard the opponent’s best offensive player,
Peterson also averaged 6.9 points against league competition.
Pajevic, a 6-8 junior center who blossomed in the postseason, averaged
7.1 points against Sea View foes, while Cameron, a 6-0 junior guard,
averaged 4 ppg in league.
