Women’s tennis: UCI upsets Penn
UC IRVINE TENNIS STADIUM - The host UC Irvine women’s tennis team,
led by a singles victory by senior Jonni Seymour, upset No. 33-ranked
Pennsylvania, 4-3, Sunday for its first win over a top-75 program this
season.
Seymour defeated Alice Pirsu, ranked 20th nationally, 6-1, retired, at
the No. 1 spot.
No. 5 singles player Christie Posner clinched the victory with a 6-4,
6-3 win over Michelle Yeh, while Anna Bentzer and Kristina Boss also were
singles victors for the Anteaters.
“We’re hoping this victory can put us in the rankings (top 75),” said
UCI Coach Mike Edles, who noted the next rankings should come out in a
few days.
The Anteaters improved to 7-6. They have not been ranked this season.
The No. 53 ranking they obtained last year was the program’s best since
1983.
