Prep track and field: Allen getting well
IRVINE - Corona del Mar High track and field standout Julie Allen,
still slowed from a bout with the flu, had enough in the tank to win the
1,600 and 3,200 meters and claim Athlete of the Meet honors Saturday at
the Irvine Invitational at Irvine High.
Allen, a senior, was the lone local winner, clocking a 5:07.2 in the
1,600 and an 11:05.6 in the 3,200.
Newport Harbor’s boys 1,600 relay of Matt Tracy, Zach Zarnow, Peter
Bass and Dartangan Johnson was second in 3:31.9. Bass, Johnson, Adam
Kerns and David Sprenger then combined to finish third in the 400 relay
in 44.28.
Sprenger, a senior, was third in the long jump (20-10), while CdM
senior Joe Barber was fourth in the shot put (49-8).
CdM’s Sara Claster, Katherine Morse, Becky Cummins and Melissa Swigert
combined to finish fourth in the 1,600 relay (4:15), despite a near
disaster on the pass from Morse to Cummins, created when a rival runner
collided with Morse, but not before Cummins had taken the baton and was
able to escape without falling.
CdM sophomore Kevin Artz was fifth in the 800 (2:01.8).
