Sailors win tournament
COSTA MESA - Newport Harbor High’s softball team won twice on
Saturday, claimed the Costa Mesa Invitational championship and ran its
record to 5-0 with victories over Corona del Mar (9-4) and Anaheim (5-0)
at TeWinkle Park.
The Sailors punished rival Corona del Mar with a 16-hit attack, keyed
by the performance of catcher Amanda Campbell, who was 4 for 4 with a
double, three RBI and two runs scored.
Corona del Mar held a 4-2 lead through four innings, but Newport
delivered three in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to turn it
into a runaway.
Then the Sailors dueled Anaheim for the crown and Kim Moore spun a
one-hitter.
Harbor broke it open in the third inning with three runs off singles
from Sabrina Couch, Athena Vasquez, Ashley Gleason and Bailey Bearden.
An inning later Jennifer Gummerman, Gleason and Shelby Crisp delivered
singles and the Sailors had another run to up the margin to 5-0 and Moore
went on to finish the Colonists off. .
