Prep baseball: Eagles, Lobos tie
COSTA MESA - Darkness intervened before host Estancia High and Los
Amigos could settle a 9-9 tie in an eight-inning Costa Mesa Division
consolation baseball game in the Newport Elks Tournament Tuesday.
Los Amigos was deemed the winner on total bases for purposes of the
tournament bracket, but it will count as a tie for both teams.
The Eagles (0-2-1) led, 2-1 and 9-8, but helped the Lobos come back by
committing six errors, four of which came in the Lobos’ five-run fifth.
Senior Paul Flory had a three-run double to cap a four-run sixth for
the hosts, who then saw Los Amigos force extra innings with a single run
in the seventh.
J.B. Goff (2 for 4 with an RBI), Justin Lund (2 for 4 with two
doubles), Casey Gates (2 for 3 with two runs) and Flory (2 for 5) were
hitting stars for the Eagles.
Estancia sophomore Jose Jaregi drove in two runs with a single in his
first varsity at-bat and Eric Scheafer added an RBI single for the
Eagles, who outhit the Lobos, 11-10.
Estancia closes out the tournament Saturday against the loser of
Tuesday’s Rancho Alamitos-Cerritos game.
