Looking back, 5 years ago this week.
The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team stumbles its way to a
50-47 victory over Troy in the second round of the CIF Southern Section
Division II-A playoffs. The Sailors commit 21 turnovers, but still go on
to win. They take an early 11-4 lead, then later use a 13-3 run to take a
31-23 advantage into halftime. Breanna Badorek and M.E. Clayton combine
for 23 points, making most of their shots down low. Colleen Eadie leads
the way, scoring a game-high 19 points. Eadie adds a team-high nine
rebounds, as well as four assists and four steals.
The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team crushes Grossmont
College, 93-48, in the first round of the Southern California Regional
playoffs. Traci Nakamura, a 5-foot-2 guard, comes up huge. She drains
three three-pointers en route to 18 points, tallies five assists and, in
the middle of the second half, the sophomore jumps and knocks the ball
away from 6-4 Shannon Hugh, who is holding the ball over her head. Dianne
Pulido, the Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year, leads the
Pirates with a game-high 25 points, while Saki Takemoto scores 16 and
Arlyn Rambayon adds 13.
The OCC men’s volleyball team sweeps to its sixth straight victory
with a 15-7, 15-12, 15-3 win over visiting Irvine Valley. Jason Klems
leads OCC with a match-high 14 kills. John Coon, a 6-5 freshman middle
blocker from Corona del Mar, finishes with eight kills and three aces.
OCC kill leader Kevin Reid has 12 kills to run his season total to 79.
Reid also finishes with two aces and a block.
Looking back, 10 years ago this week.
The Estancia High boys basketball team unloads on El Dorado, 81-64,
for a victory in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division
III-AA playoffs. Jeff Byrne, a 6-7 forward, scores 10 of his 17 points in
the first quarter as the Eagles outscore El Dorado, 23-13, in the first eight minutes. Five of Byrne’s six rebounds are offensive in the first
half. He is perfect (5 for 5) from the field in the opening period, grabs
three rebounds and adds one block and one steal. Matt Fuerbringer scores
a game-high 25 points, while Jim Faulkner adds 16 points and Russell King
chips in 10.
The Newport Harbor boys soccer team stuffs visiting Palm Springs for a
2-0 win in the second round of the CIF Division I-A playoffs. Newport
scores twice in the first half, then uses the strength of senior sweeper
Branon Coluccio in the second half to keep the Indians out of the net.
Brian Groskreutz scores on a header off a loose ball in the 11th minute.
With one minute left in the first half, Chris Hunter drills a hard,
left-footed shot into the net from beyond the 18-yard box. Newport
freshman goalkeeper Mike Freeman records 10 saves, five in each half.
Travis Grant scores a pair of goals to lead the Corona del Mar boys
soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Troy in the second round of the CIF
Division I-A playoffs. The Sea Kings post a 2-0 lead after Taylor Donavan
fires the ball from midfield to a streaking Grant, who gains control of
the ball, dribbles past a defender and shoots it into the back of the net
past the diving goalie.
