WHAT HAPPENED:
City Council decided to extend the city’s contract with Nationwide
Environmental Services to sweep the streets of Huntington Beach twice a
week until Oct. 2003 and not have city staff take on the task.
WHAT IT MEANS:
The city has an option to go for a competitive bid after Oct. 2002
when the current contract expires.
The Competitive Services Committee, headed by council woman Pam Julien
Houchen, evaluated a city sweeping program compared to using an outside
contractor to and recommended that the city sweep its own streets.
Council members were concerned, however, with adding additional staff
because of the city’s current budget constraints.
