Marina High senior running back Turill Engelman was one of 18 high

school players to be part of the 2002 football signees with the

University of Montana.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Engelman, who signed with the Grizzlies last

week, rushed for 1,250 yards on 174 carries -- a 7.2 average -- and 12

touchdowns last fall. He earned first team All-Sunset League honors and

was a second team All-county selection.

Engelman, who runs track for the Vikings, ran a 10.7 last spring in

the 100 meters.

He was one of nine Californians and the lone running back to sign with

Montana’s tradition-rich football program.

In December, the Grizzlies capped a 15-1 season by defeating Furman in

the NCAA Division I-AA national championship game. It was the second

national crown for Montana, which has played in the I-AA title game in

four of the last seven years.

In 1995, Montana defeated Marshall to win its first championship in

its very first appearance in a I-AA title game.

Edison’s Huff heading to UNLV

Edison High goalkeeper Jenna Huff was one of five recruits to sign

with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Rebels women’s soccer coach Dan

Abdalla announced this week. A 6-foot senior, Huff was named first team

All-Sunset League and played for the California South Olympic Development

Team. She is a member of the Santa Anita Strikers, which currently is the

No. 1 ranked club team in the country.

“Jenna has played with and against the best youth players in the

country and has consistently excelled,” Abdalla said. “Her height and

shot-stopping ability will allow her to compete for significant playing

time right away.”
