CIF basketball playoffs underway

The CIF-Southern Section boys’ and girls’ basketball playoffs are

underway this week, with seven teams participating in postseason play.

On the boys’ court, Marina, an at-large entry from the Sunset League,

hosted Walnut of the Baseline League in a Division I-A wild-card game

held Wednesday. A win by the Vikings would send them into a Friday first

round game at South Coast League champion Mission Viejo. Also on

Wednesday, Edison, the Sunset’s No. 3 entry, hosted Warren, an at-large

team out of the San Gabriel Valley League, in another Division I-A

wild-card matchup. A Chargers victory puts them into a Friday first round

matchup at Sierra League co-champion Rowland.

Golden West League champion Ocean View drew a first round home

assignment on Friday and will host Freeway League at-large entry Buena

Park in a Division III-AA game.

In girls’ playoff action, two teams make their playoff debut tonight

and two more play first round games on Saturday.

Tonight, Huntington Beach, an at-large entry from the Sunset League,

visits Channel League runner-up and perennial power Buena in a Division

II-AA game, and Ocean View, the No. 3 team out of the Golden West League,

visits Orange League runner-up Magnolia in a III-AA contest.

On Saturday two Sunset League teams will open play in Division I-A as

runner-up Edison hosts El Toro, the South Coast League’s No. 3 team, and

the Sunset’s No. 3 team, Marina, visits Century League champion Santa Ana

Valley.

All games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tip-offs.
