The CIF-Southern Section boys’ and girls’ basketball playoffs are
underway this week, with seven teams participating in postseason play.
On the boys’ court, Marina, an at-large entry from the Sunset League,
hosted Walnut of the Baseline League in a Division I-A wild-card game
held Wednesday. A win by the Vikings would send them into a Friday first
round game at South Coast League champion Mission Viejo. Also on
Wednesday, Edison, the Sunset’s No. 3 entry, hosted Warren, an at-large
team out of the San Gabriel Valley League, in another Division I-A
wild-card matchup. A Chargers victory puts them into a Friday first round
matchup at Sierra League co-champion Rowland.
Golden West League champion Ocean View drew a first round home
assignment on Friday and will host Freeway League at-large entry Buena
Park in a Division III-AA game.
In girls’ playoff action, two teams make their playoff debut tonight
and two more play first round games on Saturday.
Tonight, Huntington Beach, an at-large entry from the Sunset League,
visits Channel League runner-up and perennial power Buena in a Division
II-AA game, and Ocean View, the No. 3 team out of the Golden West League,
visits Orange League runner-up Magnolia in a III-AA contest.
On Saturday two Sunset League teams will open play in Division I-A as
runner-up Edison hosts El Toro, the South Coast League’s No. 3 team, and
the Sunset’s No. 3 team, Marina, visits Century League champion Santa Ana
Valley.
All games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tip-offs.
