College soccer: UCI soccer players honored
Senior UC Irvine men’s soccer player Saul Wolf and senior women’s
soccer player Natalie Franklin were named second-team Verizon Academic
All-Americans.
Wolf, an international studies major, was the 2001 Big West Conference
Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He had 11 points on three goals and five
assists in his final collegiate season.
Franklin, who started 16 of 17 games last season, had two goals and
four assists for eight points. She was also a second-team All-Big West
Conference selection in 2000 and 2001. Majoring in social science,
Franklin has been on the UCI Dean’s list every quarter in her two years
at UCI.
To be eligible for academic All-American honors, a competitor must
have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be
a starter or important reserve. Athletes also must be in their second
season at their current school. Thirty-four male student-athletes and 33
female student-athletes were honored as first-, second- or third-team
Academic All-Americans.
