Newport Harbor High outscored league-leading Woodbridge by 10
points in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the visiting Sailors
fell, 59-39, in a Sea View League girls basketball game Tuesday.
Newport made 12 of 14 free throws in the game, including 8 of 8 in the
second half.
The Sailors (4-19, 1-7 in league) were held to nine points in the
first half, but outscored Woodbridge, 30-22, in the second half.
“The free throws are a big achievement for our team,” Newport Coach
Jen Thompson said. “In the second half in general we came out playing
more aggressive. We came out going after the ball, going after rebounds.”
Jillianne Whitfield led Newport with 11 points and seven rebounds,
followed by Victoria Swigart (eight points), Vanessa Miller (six points),
Athena Vasquez (five points) and Ally Stoltz (five points).
Evita Castillo and Lindsey Woller each chipped in with four rebounds
in the Sailors’ last contest of the season. Woodbridge improves to 7-0 in
league.
