Community college baseball: Bucs nip and coast

COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College baseball team showed two ways
of winning Saturday, posting a close 6-5 victory over Eastern Utah and
then a big 22-0 triumph over DeAnza in the conclusion of the Matt O’Brien
Tournament at OCC.
OCC sophomore pitcher Matt Clanton struck out 13 in seven innings. The
Pirates (3-0) allowed four runs in the ninth inning, but held on for the
win to open their doubleheader.
OCC then used a 10-run fourth inning to blast DeAnza. Freshman Donnie
Murphy took charge with a sparkling performance, batting 4 for 5 with
five runs scored and seven RBIs. He hammered a grand slam in the Pirates’
six-run fifth inning and nailed a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Sophomore Ryan Marcos went 5 for 5, with 5 runs scored and 5 RBIs, and
smacked a three-run home run in OCC’s four-run first inning.
OCC sophomores Jake Garcia (3 for 4), Scott Beerer (2 for 4), Ryan
Hanson (2 for 3 with three runs scored) and Glenn Hedgpeth (2 for 3 three
runs scored) also contributed in the win. Freshman Greg Benoit also
helped out with a home run.
On the mound, Beerer gave up one hit in five innings pitched and was
pulled because of the Pirates’ large margin.
OCC returns to action Tuesday at Long Beach CC, playing at 2 p.m.
